HEALTHY-AGING CUISINE:  USEFUL TIPS

July 2019

It is no secret that choosing a diet rich in a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables is good for your health, but there is continually more research to confirm that eating a good range of high quality, primarily vegetarian foods can also assist with slowing down the ageing process and help us to look and feel our best.

THE ORIGINAL MAYR CUISINE: A FUNDAMENTAL

The Original Mayr cuisine lays important foundations for a healthy, balanced life. At the same time, it also draws upon a number of aspects of anti-ageing cuisine. A balanced diet should supply the body with all the substances it needs, protect the cells and keep it healthy. The Original Mayr cuisine is also unbelievably diverse, crafting dishes from a massive range of foodstuffs. But one food group stands head and shoulders above the rest.

NOTHING’S BETTER THAN FRUIT AND VEGETABLES

To slow down the ageing process and build effective protection against free radicals, there is nothing better than plenty of fresh and seasonal fruit and vegetables. This type of plant-based nutrition has an excellent antioxidative effect. And that keeps you young. The latest findings also show that such an antioxidative effect does not rely quite so heavily on the consumption of individual substances (such as selenium, zinc or vitamin C). To achieve a strong and stable antioxidative network, it is important for multiple substances to work optimally together. And here, secondary plant substances are also particularly important, alongside minerals, trace elements and vitamins. At a practical level, nature already has a myriad foodstuffs that offer this healthy antioxidative mix. These are principally those very fruits and vegetables, fresh herbs and spices.

SECONDARY PLANT SUBSTANCES: THE ROCK-STARS OF ANTI-AGEING CUISINE

Secondary plants substances play a prominent role in anti-ageing cuisine. They are considered nutritional rock-stars as they stimulate the body’s own defences, boost enzyme production and activate cell repair. Roughly speaking, there are between 5,000 and 10,000 secondary plant substances in our nutrition that are originally antibodies, but also pigments, fragrances and flavours, of any given plant. While it’s true that they are not essential for human survival, they are nonetheless very important in terms of health. Their areas of activity are extremely diverse, the spectrum ranging from antioxidative and anti-carcinogenic through blood pressure-regulating and cholesterol-lowering right through to immunity-enhancing. Particularly effective protective substances are considered to be resveratrol (red grape), sulforaphane (broccoli) and curcumin (turmeric, used to season curries). And, once again, it is important to prioritise a diet that is rich in fruit and vegetables, preferably in organic quality. It is far more effective than consuming food supplements.

HEALTHY FATS: OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS

When you talk about healthy fats, this generally refers to foods that are chock full of omega-3 fatty acids. The body uses them to produce anti-inflammatory tissue hormones – and these, in turn, ensure that the ageing process is inhibited. Polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids are to be found primarily in marine fish, fish oil and high-grade, cold-pressed plant oils. This is why we recommend diets that are rich in fruit and veg, cold-water fish, such as herring, mackerel and salmon, high-grade, cold-pressed plant oils like rapeseed oil, walnut oil, hemp oil and flaxseed and camelina oil.

CONSUME LESS SUGAR: LIVE A LONGER AND HEALTHIER LIFE

Consuming excessive amounts of sugar can have many negative health effects, one of which is premature ageing. Cut down on sweets, fizzy drinks, white bread and pasta and opt instead to eat a varied diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds and wholegrain foods. The body takes longer to process these foods, as they elevate blood glucose levels more slowly and keep you feeling fuller for longer. Eating this way is also beneficial for weight management and is highly recommended for its anti-ageing effect.*
