SUGAR: SWEET AND DEADLY

January  2019

Yes we know- sugar tastes great, but we are all aware of its downsides. It’s a deadly glue that binds endogenous proteins to one another permanently with dire consequences: it also makes us look old and feel unwell.  v. m.

GLYCOSYLATION: THE SUGAR-GLUE TRAP

Sugar provides a quick fix when you need to boost your energy levels. It tastes good. It burns well. And it sticks things together brilliantly. That last attribute is deadly and is being closely examined by medical experts and chemists worldwide. They’ve found that sugar binds proteins together. Indeed, it binds them so tightly that they can no longer be separated from one another. Which means its function is hugely compromised and can no longer do what it is supposed to. It is this process of glycosylation that results in premature ageing and sickness.

THE DOWNSIDES OF CONSUMING TOO MUCH SUGAR

We all know that too much sugar is bad for you. Excess sugar consumption impacts on the ageing process and on your health as a whole. It encourages the development of type 2 diabetes. It makes the proteins in the ocular lens stick together, thus upping the odds of developing a cataract. It makes the proteins in the vascular walls stick together and makes them harder, resulting in problems with circulation and high blood pressure and making it more difficult for wounds to heal.

CONSUME LESS SUGAR: LIVE A LONGER AND HEALTHIER LIFE

The solution is simple: reduce the amount of sugar you consume. And not just the obviously sugary products like sweets, fizzy drinks and chocolates that you need to watch out for. Foodstuffs like pasta, bread and biscuits contain sugar, too. It’s important to cut down on these in the long term. It’s a good idea to opt for foods that contain complex carbohydrates; these include vegetables and wholegrain products. The body takes longer to process them, so that blood glucose levels increase slowly rather than at an explosive rate. A varied diet containing an abundance of vegetables, wholegrain products, nuts, seeds, meat and cheese is demonstrably beneficial for weight management. In terms of glycosylation, its anti-ageing effects also make it a no-brainer.
