THE MICROBIOME: THE STAR OF THE IMMUNE SYSTEM

The gut and its microbiome are the main players in our immune system. Learn more about their role and what you can actively do to strengthen your gut health.

Every year, after a hot summer, we look forward to those first fresh mornings, when there is already a delicate hint of autumn in the air. And while nature is slowly changing colour leaf by leaf, more and more viruses are swirling through the air again. It’s time to strengthen your defences for the winter. And the best way to do that is to take care of your digestion. How well our immune system works is hugely dependent on our gut health.

THE GUT: EIGHT METRES FULL OF IMMUNE DEFENCES

In fact, the gut is our largest internal organ. If you add up the small and large intestine, you get a respectable length of eight metres and a remarkable total surface of up to 500 square metres. The intestines also need to be this size in order to properly break down the food and utilise the nutrients. But at the same time it also offers viruses, bacteria and germs a large target. And it’s always on the defensive: Between 70 and 80% of all defensive reactions in our body take place in the intestine. This is where viruses and bacteria, etc. are identified, antibodies formed, pathogens eliminated and then transported out of the body. But this only works smoothly if the intestine and microbiome are healthy.

THE MICROBIOME: COMMUNITY OF GUT BACTERIA

The term “microbiome” refers to the entirety of all bacteria and microorganisms that live in a symbiotic community within the human body. While our microbiome is in balance, it supports us in digestion and in fighting disease-causing viruses, bacteria, fungi and germs. It also ensures that our immune system is constantly trained and remains efficient. In order to be able to effectively prevent diseases and inflammation, it is therefore important to protect and promote balance in the intestine.

HOW TO SUPPORT YOUR GUT AND MICROBIOME IN EVERYDAY LIFE

Gut health and microbiome balance are significantly influenced by diet and lifestyle – both positively and negatively. Our gut loves a healthy, balanced diet with high-fibre foods such as vegetables, fruit and whole grain products. It also likes probiotic foods such as buttermilk and yoghurt as well as fermented vegetables, sauerkraut and kimchi. And it enjoys plenty of exercise. You should avoid fast food, salty and greasy ready-to-eat meals, flavour enhancers, alcohol, nicotine and of course stress.
