WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF FASTING?

The human body reacts to food deprivation in various ways. It switches to fasting mode and initiates a number of biochemical reactions that are exceptionally good for us. The body is hard at work with cell renewal, self-healing powers are activated, stress is reduced and our emotional well-being enhanced. Fasting triggers a special cell renewal process, also known as autophagy (from the Greek “autophagos” – meaning “self-devouring”).

Pausing the intake of food causes changes to the metabolism of cells. The cell is not supplied with external energy, therefore, it looks for other sources of energy. It draws on its own reserves and removes damaged cell material. In simple terms: it clears itself out. At the same time, undamaged cellular components are recycled and healthy new cells are formed. This rejuvenates the cell structure and activates self-healing powers. This essential cleansing and renewal process begins after 12 to 15 hours without food (dinner cancelling or pure alkaline bouillon in the evening) and has an anti-ageing effect on cells.

If you can hold out for the first two or three days of fasting, you can look forward to a little euphoric high, improved concentration and increased well-being. This high is often described as the “fasting high”. At this point, the brain releases more of the happy hormone serotonin, which reduces anxiety and stress.

Fasting also has a very positive effect on the autonomic (or vegetative) nervous system, which regulates all involuntary processes in the body, such as the heartbeat. The absence of digestive processes relaxes the nervous system, giving it space for other vital processes. Abstaining from food stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, which primarily gives recovery signals and maintains bodily functions when the body is at rest. Stress hormone levels in the blood decrease. Adrenaline, cortisol and norepinephrine are permanently reduced. Inner calm and relaxation are achieved.
